At Springfield Middle School, we foster the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth of our students while preparing them to be successful learners in the 21st century.

PBIS at SPMS:

What is PBIS?

• PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. 
• It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school wide and classroom discipline systems.
• It establishes clearly defined outcomes that relate to academic and social behavior.
• A process of improving a schools ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students.
• Utilizes data to guide decision making.
• Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement and evaluate effective school wide, classroom, non-classroom and student specific discipline plans. (Sugai, Horner & Todd, 2000)
  
  

So what does this mean?
PBIS is a systematic way to prevent negative behaviors before they start and create interventions for students who display negative behaviors when they do start AND doing it all in a positive way!  A reduction in office referrals equals more time for students in class to be engaged in academics versus time in the office. This means more time for learning and teaching.
 
What does this look like at Springfield?

In 2005, Springfield was named an Exemplar School and in 2008 was recognized as a Banner School by the Maryland State Department of Education and we are holding to those high standards of implementation of PBIS.  From 2009-2010 and 2012 through 2019 Springfield was recognized as a Gold School. In 2011 we were recognized as a Silver School.
