"The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers..
But above all, the world needs dreamers who do"
Nargis Dutt Foundation is a registered, charitable organization working passionately in the areas of Health & Education since 1981. The trust is registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act 1950 under registration number E- 9080
Nargis Dutt Foundation was first set up in 1981 in New York city by Sunil Dutt and the Indian Community in New York, after Nargis Dutt succumbed to Cancer after a yearlong battle at the Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital.
During her intense treatment she expressed great sorrow for those who suffered from this disease but had no facilities to be treated in India. She hoped one day when she got better she could do something about this situation. Her anguish and feelings became a part of Sunil Dutt’s mission in life who turned her dream into a reality. Today they both live through the work of the Nargis Dutt Foundation.
Nargis Dutt Foundation established 7 chapters across USA and Canada and have equipped over 100 rural hospitals across India with equipment worth more than 5 million dollars. These include cancer treatment and diagnostic equipment as well as mobile hospital vans. The first bone marrow transplant and the ICU center in Tata Memorial Hospital which was carried out at the Tata Memorial Hospital in 1983 was supported by us. The ICU at Tata Memorial was named after Nargis Dutt, and was inaugurated by the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Nargis Dutt Foundation also had its presence wherever there was a national calamity in India, be it the earthquakes in Latur and Bhuj or the floods in Mumbai and Bihar. The Nargis Dutt Foundation Medical Van equipped with a mobile X-ray machine was the first to reach Bhuj after the devastation cause by the earthquake. When Bihar was hit by the floods in 2008, Nargis Dutt Foundation raised funds that treated over 30000 people, over a period of 3 months, through medical camps in the affected areas.
Today Nargis Dutt Foundation is covering areas not only in the medical field but has broadened its vision to health and education. Since 2004, it has been conducting regular medical camps in the slums of Mumbai, working with cancer patients and Tata Memorial focusing on women and children both in health and education. Our vision is to deliver basic health care where there is none and ensure quality of learning where there is no opportunity.
Keeping this is mind, approximately 30000 children from the slums have received free computer education. NDF has focused on E- Shalas in schools in Rural India. It has been working in Palghar district empowering and upgrading the schools holistically with clean drinking water, clean toilets, playgrounds, musical labs, science labs, computer labs, e-learning, extra classrooms, libraries and related. The education of meritorious poor students are also being supported.
Keeping in mind the vision and life of our founder Sunil Dutt and our visionary Nargis Dutt, the focus of Nargis Dutt Foundation is to reach out to all those in need irrespective of caste, creed and religion, its mission is to work for humanity. Where ever there is a need we will be there in service with whatever resource we can offer. Our work has been very extensive and silent.
