About Fort Hunt Elementary School
Mission Statement
Fort Hunt Elementary School empowers students to become independent and collaborative problem solvers; empathetic and resilient learners; and respectful, community-oriented citizens of the world.
Built in 1969 on land once owned by George Washington, Fort Hunt Elementary School lies cradled in a bend of the Potomac River, surrounded by such renowned neighbors as Mount Vernon, Fort Hunt Park, River Farm, Dyke Marsh, and Huntley Meadows. This culturally rich community expands our campus and our horizons, while it enriches our curriculum.
Fort Hunt Elementary is also known for its Spanish language partial-immersion program in grades 1 through 6, which draws students from both inside and outside of the school boundaries. This optional program gives students the opportunity to gain a command of the Spanish language while being taught math, science, and health in Spanish. Social studies, language arts, and all other subjects are taught in English.

As a Fine Arts Focus school, Fort Hunt teachers integrate curriculum content with the arts utilizing differentiated instructional strategies which are tailored to meet the strengths and needs of each individual student. Teachers and staff at Fort Hunt collaborate with one another taking advantage of the skills and knowledge of each individual ensuring that each child has the opportunity to excel. They learn about the arts and ways to integrate the arts in their teaching. Teachers participate in a range of programs designed to meet their varying needs, interests, and experience creating opportunities for our students to learn through arts integrated instruction. This has established a shared vision for arts-integrated instruction and a climate for teacher learning and collaboration at Fort Hunt Elementary. Fort Hunt offers a Spanish language partial-immersion program in grades 1 through 6, which draws students from both inside and outside of the school boundaries. At Fort Hunt students are expected to meet or exceed current Virginia Standards of Learning and Fairfax County Program of Studies grade-level requirements. The Fort Hunt staff is expected to educate a diverse population of students in an inclusive setting while striving to provide meaningful and enriching instructional lessons for each child.
