Vision Statement

Dranesville Elementary School will provide a stimulating, challenging, and well planned academic program. We recognize that each student has special needs and endeavors to meet those needs through active engagement. Feelings of self-worth and a desire for personal growth are fostered in a nurturing environment that honors diversity, learning styles and abilities.

Mission Statement

Three objectives have been developed for the School Plan:

  1. To improve student achievement in all curricular areas with an emphasis on reading and writing.
  2. To improve student achievement in mathematics with the emphasis on the development of strategies to improve problem-solving and basic computation.
  3. To ensure high standards of student behavior and good citizenship, and to maintain a safe, orderly, and equitable school environment.

School Summary

Dranesville Elementary is located just outside the boundaries of the town of Herndon. The community is extremely supportive, as parents and educators work together in recognition of the strong teamwork that serves to provide a quality education for each student.

High expectations are held for student performance in all areas of the curriculum, with an emphasis on developing strategies for lifelong learners, problem-solving skills, and conceptual knowledge. . Advanced Academic strategies and curriculum are offered throughout the grade levels and Dranesville Elementary is inaugurating its own Local Level IV Advanced Academic Program beginning with the 3rd grade class of 2013-14.

Modern technology is an important part of instruction. Each classroom is equipped with a SMART board and a minimum of three computers which promote student learning through collaboration and project based learning. Students use the latest technology in the school library, and supervised Internet access is possible in each classroom. Although the school has a full-time technology specialist, all teachers share in the technology instruction provided to all students.

Students participate each week in physical education, music, and art classes taught by specialists. These disciplines are essential to the growth of all Dranesville students. There are many opportunities to seek additional experiences in the specialty areas including orchestra, band, chorus, the Drumming Dragons, the after school art club, and after school running clubs.

Respect is a key term in understanding daily life at Dranesville. Students are due respect and they owe respect to adults and to each other. An emphasis on other widely accepted values through Positive Behavior Support and Responsive Classroom help all to grow in responsibility.
